EQUINOR OUT & STOPPING THE BAY DU NORD PROJECT
This week, community members met with Joanne Thompson, MP for St. John’s East and Minister of Fisheries for Newfoundland and Labrador, to raise concerns about the Bay du Nord offshore oil project and its risks for the province’s future. The community members emphasised that Bay du Nord should not be framed as a “nation-building” project, as the massive offshore oil development poses unacceptable risks to fisheries, marine ecosystems, and Canada’s climate commitments. Instead, they urged Minister Thompson to consider renewable energy as a more unifying and forward-looking legacy for the Liberal government’s energy portfolio.

Why
EquinorOUT
Equinor has less than 1% of investments in renewables and continues to invest in oil and gas projects in Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond. We ask that Equinor align with global predictions of success and to get out of oil and gas.
#equinorOUT - Stop Bay du Nord is a recent project aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing action to stop Equinor, a Norwegian energy company, from proceeding with their proposed Bay du Nord oil project in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The project highlights the environmental risks and potential negative impact on local communities, and seeks to advocate for sustainable, alternative energy solutions.

The Bay du Nord project is made up of several oil discoveries in the Flemish Pass basin, located about 500 km northeast of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The initial discovery was made by Equinor in 2013, followed by others in 2014, 2016, and 2020.
