We aim to represent the diversity in our members, expertise, and approaches through a lens of weaving data and stories for change.

Why are we the Mixed Coast Collective?

Mixed

"Mixed" represents the diversity of our members, expertise, and approaches to addressing pressing issues for our communities, like the climate crisis and environmental racism.

We intentionally centre and uplift Black, Indigenous, Racialized, and Migrant peoples, as we are the peoples most impacted by the growing climate crisis and ongoing oppressions.

Coast

Broadly, "coast" evokes the intersections of Land and Water, and the environmental protections necessary for both to thrive. "Coast" also references the coastal communities of eastern and western Ktaqmkuk (Newfoundland) connecting to form the Mixed Coast Collective.

Collective

We believe in the true value of collaborative efforts when seeking solutions.

Our Logo

All hands in for climate justice

After considering a variety of coastal and environmental imagery to represent our focus on climate justice, we found our draft logos would be repeating patterns of shorelines and the beloved lighthouse we've seen a few too many times.

Instead of being a lonely beacon of light in a dark night for ships in search of climate justice, we decided to go all hands in for climate justice.

The eight people coming together with their hands-in represent the goal of collective Liberation and LANDBACK, with all taking part.

As a whole, the group also appears to blossom like a flower. This lends well to the natural circle shape, and the border used to bring everything together.

The use of lowercase text in the title circling the outer edge, "mixed coast collective", is a nod to bell hooks and her works to explore the intersectionality of race, capitalism, and gender, and their ability to produce and perpetuate systems of oppression and class domination.

Plus, lowercase is more fun and approachable than YELLING IN CAPITAL LETTERS.

We acknowledge that Ktaqamkuk is the unceded and unsurrendered land of the Mi'kmaq peoples who have taken care of this land for centuries. We also wish to acknowledge the Inuit and Innu of Labrador. We acknowledge that the white settler colonial state has been built through Indigenous genocide and land theft, the enslavement and labour theft of people of African descent through the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the fifteen thousand Chinese men who worked under exploitative conditions to build Canada’s first transcontinental railroad, the internment and forced labor of twelve thousand Japanese Canadians, and the thousands of refugees and migrants denied refuge into so-called Canada throughout its history.
